Module 5 - Topic 1: Exercises - File Converters

1. This is a hands-on exercise! You will need to email the NSL Training Support Team to be able to do this exercises. We will email you a document for you to upload onto Google Docs.

When you receive the document save it to your hard drive. Have a good look at the document because you are going to compare what it looks like when uploaded to Google Docs.

Upload to Google Docs as follows:

  • Go into Google Docs
  • Click on Upload button
  • Click on Select Files to Upload
  • Select your document
  • Click on Start Upload
  • Click on link to open the document

You may want to repeat the exercise a few times by uploading a few of your own documents to be able to do it without instructions.

For those of you who have Zoho accounts you could try the same exercise.

Now that you can see how easy it is to upload documents to Google Docs, the next time a patron has trouble accessing their Word 2007 documents on our public computers you could show them this option (they may have to sign up for a Google account). The patron documents would be saved on a portable drive (memory stick, compact disc, floppy disc) - so when uploading you would need to select the appropriate drive rather than a hard drive as used in this exercise.

2. Write a blog post, headed File Converters, where you discuss your experience of uploading the documents to Google Doc and share any thoughts you have on using online file converters.

3. Use your gmail account to email northshorelibraries@gmail.com with a link to your blogpost. Please put Module 5 - Topic 1 in the subject heading of your gmail.
